Play statistics

Only if you say yes

The short version: Sharing play statistics is optional and off unless you choose "Share stats" when the game asks. What's shared is anonymous: counts, categories and times, with nothing that identifies you or your device. You can change your mind at any time in Settings, under About.

Why we ask

These statistics exist for one reason: to check the game is working and that people are enjoying it, so we know what to build next and what to fix. Which difficulties get played? Do people finish 18 holes? Is one hole of today's Daily Solo Challenge unfairly hard? We built this ourselves, instead of using an analytics company's software, so that nothing is collected beyond the list on this page.

What's shared

Everything here is a count, a category or a length of time. The only text is a course's four-character seed and, if you made your own rules, the short code that describes them.

About each time you play

  • Whether you're on iPhone or iPad, or Android, on a phone or a tablet, and the game's version
  • Whether it's your first time playing today, this week and this month, and roughly how long ago you first opened the game (today, yesterday, this week, this month, or longer)
  • How long you played
  • How many times you opened each menu page (How to Play, High Scores, Settings and so on)
  • Whether music, sound, vibration, the turn prompt, the hole flyover and the daily reminder are on or off, and which of them you changed
  • Ads: whether a banner was shown, how many full-screen ads appeared, and whether the extra-tries ad was offered, asked for, unavailable or watched
  • Whether you own Remove Ads, and whether you bought it this time (and from which screen)
  • Whether you shared a scorecard, were shown the rating prompt, or are signed in to Game Center or Google Play Games (yes or no only, never who you are)
  • The very first time you play only: whether you started a round, finished the first hole and finished the round, and how long it took to take your first shot
  • Counts of things that went wrong: an ad that didn't load, the store being unavailable, a purchase that failed, a saved game that couldn't be opened
  • Which screen you were on when you stopped

About each round

  • The difficulty (and the custom rules, if you made your own), the number of holes and players, and whether the holes were shuffled
  • How many players used each handicap
  • How the round started: a new game, a rematch, a replay from your scores, or the Daily Solo Challenge (and which try it was)
  • The course seed, and whether you typed it, picked it or let the game roll it. For the Daily Solo Challenge, the date instead of the seed
  • Whether the round was finished, abandoned or left unfinished, how long it took, and how long any breaks were if you came back to it later
  • The star rating, if you gave the course one
  • Which easter eggs turned up

About each hole

  • Which hole of the course it was, its par and its scenery
  • What was on it: wind speed, ponds, bunkers, updrafts and downdrafts, unusual gravity, ball collisions
  • How long it took
  • For each ball, by colour and never by name: strokes, water balls, balls out of bounds or lost, and whether it was holed or picked up at the stroke limit
  • Whether the flyover was watched or skipped, and counts of pauses, How to Play being opened, zooming out, swings called off and very weak shots

What's never collected

  • Names or nicknames
  • An account, a device identifier or an advertising identifier
  • Your location
  • Your device's model or system version
  • Your IP address (see below)
  • Anything you type, apart from a four-character course seed

How it stays anonymous

Each time you play, the game makes up a random label for that session and throws it away when the session ends. A round gets its own random label, kept only until the round is over, so that a round you come back to later counts as one round. Nothing links one session to another, or any of it to you.

Because of that, we can't look up or delete "your" statistics: there's no way to tell whose they are.

The leaderboard is a separate thing with its own switch. Scores posted there carry your nickname, and nothing links them to these statistics.

About IP addresses

Like every request on the internet, these arrive at our host from an IP address. The game's server uses it for a moment to stop floods of junk, and never stores or logs it.

Where it goes

To our own server, hosted by Cloudflare. We don't share it with anyone or sell it. We keep it for as long as it's useful for understanding how the game is played.

Changing your mind

Open Settings in the game, go to About, and switch "Share anonymous stats" on or off. Turning it off stops it at once and deletes anything that hadn't been sent yet. If you answered "No thanks", the game won't ask again.
